Whether someone’s hardship arises from a layoff, an illness or other financial challenges, the YMCA strives to assist anyone in need of our programs and fellowship. While many of our programs serve children, Opening Doors supports individuals and families of all ages.
Brenda's Story
Brenda Gist is a single mother who was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. She has two boys that were 7 and 11 at the time. The children, enrolled in the YMCA Afterschool Program, were suddenly faced with their mom’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. Brenda was concerned about how her sons would handle this and didn’t want them to spend too much time at home observing her while she was sick.
The boys told their counselors what was going
on at home and the staff in the Afterschool
Program reached out to Brenda. Through
Opening Doors, funds were available for the
boys to continue coming to the YMCA.
Arrangements were also made for the boys
to play sports and get involved with
additional programs. The YMCA became
family to Brenda, by opening doors
wider than she imagined!
About Opening Doors
During 2007-2008, the Upper Palmetto YMCA provided approximately $600,000 in financial assistance to almost 5,500 participants including youth, families, adults and seniors in our community. Thanks to our donors, we turned no one who qualified away due to an inability to pay. Please join us in 2009 to continue our tradition of helping those in need in our community. You can have an immediate, life changing impact!
